Hawaiian Vacation
February, 2009

Saturday, our last full day on Oahu, we visited Diamond Head State Monument and made the climb to the top. Diamond Head is a volcano crater, and the hike is to the highest point on the rim overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The trail is paved part of the way as it was originally used by the Coast Guard for their defense installation. Most of the viewing area at the top was also part of that facility.

The park was crowded, but the parking was well organized and as the area is huge the crowds weren't noticeable. Near the parking area are restrooms and souvenir/food vendors.

From here, and with the camera zoomed in, the climb doesn't look to bad. But it winds back and forth and toward the top it gets a little rough.

Diamond Head Defense Remnants

As with most high points around Oahu, this was the location of military defense installation. These, just north of the peak, were lookout posts.

Unusual plants are everywhere on the islands. These were along the trail. There probably not unusual to kama`aina (Hawaii Residents) but we've never seen thistles like these.

Diamond Head Stairs

Besides the open trail, the climb to the top goes through a small tunnel and up this long steep flight of stairs. This was part of the military installation, as was the spiral stairway which is just beyond here. That takes you to a gun emplacement, where you squeeze through the gun slots onto a path to the stairway to the top. That's the one you saw in the second picture.

Finally, on the top. Jackie relaxes with Waikiki in the background.

Jackie moved to the side so we could show you this view of Waikiki Beach and most of the popular tourist area. It's breathtaking.

Like most points of land, Diamond Head needs a lighthouse. This one is right below the peak.

The view is great in all directions. This is toward the east with more beaches, mountains and points of land.

The climb down was a lot quicker. We stopped at a rest/lookout area for a snack. This was a great hike and definitely something you should try to do if you visit Hawaii.

After the hike we headed back to the hotel. A walk around the area after supper rounded out our stay on Oahu.

The trip to Maui on Sunday was on Go! Airlines, an inter-islandcommuter airline. The commuter terminal is small but has a shuttle bus to take passengers to the main terminal. Our flight was in a small jet, but some of these flight use airplanes with propellers.

The flight to Maui is short and takes less that 35 minutes. Fly with us by clicking the little home and selecting Maui.
